Novak Djokovic Delivers Caution to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"
The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will linger over his career like a "cloud" – and raised doubts about the scheduling of the penalty in the previous season.
Details of the Suspension
The Italian player served a three-month suspension in early 2025 after the global anti-doping body approved his account that a banned anabolic steroid, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.
"This shadow will trail him just as the cloud of Covid will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," the champion remarked in an interview on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.
"It's just something that, it was so significant, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will continually reference the incident."
The Champion's Viewpoint
Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, a regular practice partner, "didn't do it on purpose", but he then scrutinized how the Italian managed to complete his ban without missing a grand slam.
"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban coming between the slams, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it's just it was very, very odd," he further commented.
Broader Tennis Community Response
"I really don't like how the case was being handled and it was evident so many other players, both male and female, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and complaining that it was a preferable treatment."
