Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Report Numerous Deaths in Recent Cross-Border Clashes

Border Conflict Intensify
Islamabad Armed Forces and Afghan Authorities Accuse Each Other of Starting Attacks in Afghanistan's Border District of the Spin Boldak Area

Fresh hostilities erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday, with each side blaming the other of initiating lethal confrontations.

Pakistan's military announced that its forces had killed "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak border district.

A Afghan authorities spokesman claimed that 12 non-combatants had been fatally struck and over a hundred injured by Pakistani firing. He added that several Pakistani soldiers had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be verified by third parties.

Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions rocked Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban deny allegations that it is sheltering militants aiming at Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Military Confrontations

The opposing forces are not only battling for the upper hand on the border, but also on social media, attempting to persuade the public that their faction is inflicting more damage.

The latest clashes come after severe border confrontations over the past few days, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Islamabad's armed forces and Pakistan said it killed two hundred "Taliban and affiliated terrorists". The claimed death tolls provided by both parties could not be independently verified.

A few days of fragile peace that had lasted since the recent days were broken on Wednesday morning.

On-the-Ground Accounts and Consequences

Footage allegedly of the conflict and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including images said to be of those deceased and blurry shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of guard positions demolished. These recordings have not been verified.

A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about one kilometre away from the frontier post, reported that "very heavy clashes continued for almost five hours".

"We observed drones and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our family members are wounded," they added.

A doctor in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "7 bodies and thirty-six injured transported to the hospital", including men, females and minors.

The circumstances were "tense" and additional casualties were being taken to hospital, he said.

Displacement and International Responses

A regional Taliban official in Spin Boldak announced that "numerous of families have been displaced since last night due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the bodies of two Pakistani military members.

In a separate overnight clash on Pakistan's north-western border, the Pakistani military claimed that twenty-five to thirty militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been killed.

The clashes have prompted calls for de-escalation from other countries including China and Moscow, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could step in to broker a ceasefire.

On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of human rights in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of civilian casualties and displacement because of the fighting.

"I call on everyone involved to practice maximum restraint, protect non-combatants, and abide by global regulations," he stated.

Historical Disputes

Islamabad has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistani militants to operate from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to enforce a rigid Islamic-led system of rule.

The Taliban leadership has always denied these allegations.
